This is the second wine of Calon-Ségur, which is interesting for two reasons. One is that Calon-Ségur is always one of the hardest wines to get hold of, and also because many other chateaux didn't bother with their second wines: the thought being that when a vintage is as good as 2022, there is no such thing as 'second-class fruit'. In fact many of the second wines of this vintage are really on a par with the firsts. So, where second wines have been made, they tend, like this Marquis de Calon-Ségur to be outstanding value. And a top tip from us, as a rule of thumb it's always good to buy the first wines of chateaux for investment and the seconds for drinking. And I can guarantee that this would be a very enjoyable glass in a decade or so.
'Full, round and broad, the fruit juicy but structured and long. Merlot component excellent this year. Fairly harmonious with a bit of lift. Handles the alcohol well.' Jancis Robinson MW, 16.5/20
"Violet reflections, dense fully ripe berries, tannins just the right side of constricting, with black berry, spiced plums, fresh almonds and smoked earth." 90 Points, Jane Anson
