Chardonnay
150cl * 12.5% ABV * Champagne, France
The company we now know as Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 as Dubois Pere & Fils, changing its name in 1833 when the young Louis inherited the estate from his uncle. The house is perhaps best-known for Cristal (bottled in clear crystal and a flat punt), its prestige cuvee that became famous due to its associations with the Russian Imperial Court. The grapes for the vintage range of Roederer Champagnes are sourced from its own vineyards, guaranteeing that only the highest quality fruit ends up in the final blend, 90% of which is Grand and Premier Cru level.
This 100% Chardonnay wine is sourced from four plots in the Grand Cru of Avize, around 23% of which undergoes maturation in oak. Bottle-aged for almost six years before release. A rather shy and delicate wine, it suggests apple and pear fruit initially. With some aeration, it offers caramelised apple, pastry notes and roasted hazelnuts. Soft and velvety on the palate, a somewhat saline finish is underpinned by chalky freshness. A perfect partner to oysters, prawns or langoustines.
